ChatGPT, the AI Revolution, and the BA(HDT) at HKU

The BA(HDT) programme recognises that digital literacy is paramount for exploring both historical phenomena and contemporary digital culture. Our hands-on approach equips students with coding skills and technological proficiency essential for examining social and cultural dynamics. In addition to digital tools and methods, our curriculum covers the cultural, ethical, and societal impact of emerging technologies such as big data, generative artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the metaverse.

We emphasize group projects and problem-solving exercises, which help students develop strong collaborative skills crucial for modern work environments, as well as a distinctive portfolio that showcases their skills and abilities. Our curriculum is thus designed to ensure that students are not mere observers but active participants in the digital world.
Graduates of the BA(HDT) programme leave with a deep understanding of how technology interweaves with human culture, history, and society. They’re ready to lead innovation in a mindful manner, and thrive across a range of diverse fields, contributing to a world where technology enhances rather than diminishes our humanity.
